from the #BigYearAtHome Team and Environment for the Americas
Autumn migration is the first major challenge in the life cycle of migratory birds as young birds leave their nests and make their first flights to wintertime places where they have never been before. For our October #BigYearAtHome challenge we invite you to come together as a part of World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) to celebrate this phenomenon of migration around the world.
As birds wing their way south, the 2021 WMBD theme, “Sing, Fly, Soar – Like a Bird,” invites you to connect with the migratory birds and their habitats. This year we celebrate the freedom of birds, the beauty of their songs, and the spectacular phenomenon of their migrations. Through WMBD virtual programming and education materials, you can engage and learn about birds and their conservation. In October, WMBD will take us to sites where our shared birds stop to rest and refuel and to the places where they breed. CLICK HERE to join the WMBD community at BIRD DAY LIVE!
October 9th marks the official fall celebration of World Migratory Bird Day. For over 25 years, WMBD has worked across borders to bring people together in observing the remarkable phenomenon of bird migration and learning ways to protect our shared long-distance travelers . In America, educators in Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean are greeting migratory birds with family events, presentations, and activities that raise awareness about their flights and the need for their protection. On October 9, 2021, we celebrate ′′Sing, Fly and Rise Like Birds ′′ by gathering our voices for our winged friends. Join us in this great global choir. CLICK HERE to learn more about WMBD.
WMBD always works to promote the simple actions we can do at home to help migratory birds along the way. This year, organizations across the globe are introducing people of all ages to birds and their migrations and hosting educational sessions. Fall focuses especially on activities on the wintering grounds, as birds arrive after nesting and raising young. Want to help raise awareness of birds and their conservation? Be A Bird Day Ambassador and help support bird conservation education. You can join the effort by helping deliver education materials and/or binoculars when you travel or by contributing to the donation of much-needed binoculars and/or supporting the Spanish, English, and Portuguese education materials that help to spread the word about bird migrations.
This Thursday, October 7th, join us to learn how putting binoculars into the hands of youth and adults can help to spark a passion for birds and support researchers and educators across the Western Hemisphere. Visit BirdDayLive.com for more details.
