People have come to the Partners in Flight network through different routes from different backgrounds. For PIF’s 30th anniversary year, we asked our partners to share their stories of becoming involved in PIF, and how their involvement has been beneficial. Please enjoy these rich Testimonials.

Partners in Flight (PIF) Awards recognize exceptional contributions to the field of landbird conservation in the Americas in the categories of Leadership, Investigations, Public Awareness, Stewardship, and the David N. Pashley Lifetime Achievement Award. The PIF 2020 Awards were presented by EJ Williams, with an introduction by PIF Coordinator Bob Ford, at the 86th North American Wildlife and Natural Resources Conference on March 11, 2021.

This article highlights the work of N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission biologists and partners to identify threats to bird populations and habitats, and to alleviate these threats whenever possible. Partners in Flight and our 30th anniversary are featured in the article.

“Celebrating 30 years of innovative bird conservation, the partnership faces the challenges of stopping further declines.” Geoffrey Geupel and Robert Ford share PIF history, achievements, lessons learned, and the “Five Game Changers” that were developed to address challenges facing bird populations.

Recent additions include “Conservation on a Grand Scale,” “Decision Support Tool: Science and Adaptive Management in a National Monument,” and “Partners in Flight Action Brief – September 2020.”

In 1992, Peter Stangel and Amos Eno of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation shared the visions and hopes for the future for Partners in Flight in a changing world. Now in our 30th anniversary year, as we learn from our past and prepare for the next 30 years, we see that these insights are still relevant in our continuing efforts to drive bird conservation forward and keep Partners in Flight discussions on the cutting edge of wildlife conservation.

This year we celebrate a watershed in bird conservation: the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act (NMBCA). Building on the momentum created in the 1980’s that led to the 1990 launch of Partners in Flight, Congress passed the NMBCA in July of 2000. The goals of the NMBCA include perpetuating healthy bird populations, providing financial resources for bird conservation, and fostering international cooperation.
