Partners in Flight is excited to introduce Jocelynn Marriott as the new acting interim US Coordinator. We look forward to her leadership for PIF over the next few months. Please get to know Jocelynn by reviewing their bio below and say hi to her in PIF meetings.
Jocelynn Marriott is an early career biologist devoted personally and professionally to avian conservation. With her current employer, Eocene Environmental, she serves her peers and clients on several projects, providing custom data collection services and data management infrastructure depending on client and project needs. She is also a field biologist with Eocene, conducting regular nesting bird surveys.
As co-lead of her local MAPS (Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship) banding station since September 2022. Jocelynn ensures proper permitting and coordinates banders and visitors, having recently created a station staff website and app. She is proficient in the extraction, banding, aging, and sexing of local birds.
Jocelynn began a career in biology and technology with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC, Canada, earned in June 2021 after a decade of travel abroad. She studied ecology, evolution, conservation, GIS, genetics, and zoology, completing her undergraduate thesis on the reconstruction of ancestral states of structural plumage coloration in an avian family (Thraupidae).
Jocelynn obtained bander certifications from the Puget Sound Bird Observatory in Edmonds, WA (August 2019) and the Institute for Bird Populations in Los Osos, CA (March 2023). These certifications provided training in aging and sexing birds using plumage, skull, sexual traits, feather molt, and wear, as well as handling/extraction of passerines and corvids.
Jocelynn started at Eocene Environmental (formerly Transcon Environmental) as Fieldwork Coordinator and Field Biologist in November 2021. In this role, she managed the intake and processing of around 600 client fieldwork requests annually, edited and finalized fieldwork deliverables, and scheduled field biologists while overseeing employee field safety. Jocelynn also cataloged field employees’ experience and preferences, assisted with proposals, and developed the existing fieldwork coordination program by improving workflows, training, communication, and various digital resources.
In August 2023, Jocelynn transitioned into a Technology Development role at Eocene. She now manages data collection and reporting on all projects in her region (California) using Survey123 Connect. She also analyzes project workflows for efficiency, automates tasks with Power Automate, and implements new technologies to meet various project needs.
As a dual citizen of Canada and the United States, with French Canadian and rural prairie roots, Jocelynn is fluent in French and speaks basic Spanish. Raised in Saskatoon, SK, she has lived in Tofino, BC, Bellingham, WA, and San Luis Obispo, CA, and is well-traveled. She is a life enthusiast and enjoys birding (of course), hiking, food, wine, friends, and family.
